Juniors Program
Junior rowing is a varsity sport for ages 11 to 18. Spring Season is the primary Varsity Season, with sprint racing. The fall season is longer distance racing.
NO experience is required, and their are no "cuts" - sign up and you are a team member.
You can sign up NOW! Click the Sessions and Registration tab for more information.
Practices include on the water rowing time, and land workouts with rowing machines, strength training and aerobic conditioning. Coach Fleming Brainerd has years of experience coaching at clubs in the Puget Sound Region, and every year since the founding of North Cascades Crew, has trained rowers who qualified to go to the Junior Nationals Rowing Championships.
Rowers need to pass a swim/float test prior to going out on the water. The club is a member of US Rowing and meets all safety standards for the sport.
Practices
Being on time is essential ! Practices are busy, and boats need a person in each seat.
There will be on-the-water time, as well and on-land training at each practice. Land training will emphasize aerobic conditioning, strength training, and technique work on rowing machines. In-the-boat time focuses on rowing technique and aerobic capacity.
Clothing & Appearance
Wear non-baggy layered clothing for all types of weather, as we only come off the water if there is lightning, high winds or heavy rain. Cotton clothes get wet and stay wet, so we recommend synthetics such as polypro, lycra, and polyester. Walmart, Target, the Brooks outlet in Mill Creek and other sporting goods stores carry performance clothes.
Bring a full set of spare clothes in case you flip. Everyone does it sometime, and you will need to get dry.
Keep your nails clipped as your hands will cross in sculling and you'll scratch yourself.
If you have long hair or bangs, bring hair ties. You will want to keep your hair out of your face so you can see what is going on.
Food & Water
Bring one or two full water bottles every day. Use the refillable ones so we don't have to worry about trash in the parking lot.
Have a snack on your way to rowing. You'll be exercising hard for a couple of hours! Bring a high-protein snack to eat on the way home. You should have a little protein within a half an hour of your workout for muscle building.
Comportment & Saftey
While at practice, respect the area and your teammates. You are in a public place with townspeople and residents nearby. You represent our team so keep your behavior appropriate. No cussing, driving erratically in parking lot, loud music, et cetera. We don't have lockers, so stay out of other people's bags as a general rule. If you have an issue with a teammate that is hard to resolve, ask for help and don't let it escalate.
For safety, we will have one coach/parent on land during each practice.
Regattas
Two regattas are inculded in your season fee. If participants would like to go to additional races, they are on a pay-as-you go basis. The fees would be actual costs divided among participants. Each person would pay their own entry fees, plus a share of trailering, lodging, food and other associated costs. The kids will be doing fundraisers to offset the costs if travel to other regattas is planned. Regatta fees must be paid in advance of the regatta.
The optional regattas are Brentwood in Canada, and NW Regionals in Vancouver WA. At all regattas, we will be doing our best to keep costs as low as possible. You will be notified well in advance of the expected fee.
If you cannot attend a regatta, please tell the coach at least one month in advance. Regatta entries are submitted well in advance of the event, and they will need to know exactly which members of the crew will be available to place in boats.
