Recreational, Competitive, & Open Row Groups

Written by Wendy Clark. Posted in Masters

Recreational Group

Our recreational rowing members can develop their skills and technique and get a great workout in a relaxed environment. Members of the Recreational Group are invited to attend two to four coached sessions a week, as well as using equipment for Open Row Sessions.

Competitive Group

Coaching and practices for the Competitive Group are more rigorous workouts with emphasis on fitness, technique and race preparation. It is not required to participate in regattas to be in the Competitive Group. Rowers interested in participating in the Competitive Rowing Program will undergo a skill assessment conducted by our Head Coach, Fleming Brainerd. Members of the Competitive Group can attend two to four coached sessions a week, as well as  equipment access for Open Row.

The NCC Masters Program offers flexibility for members to move from Recreational to Competitive Groups as they wish.

NCC Masters Open Row Sessions

Members, after approval by coach, and passing the "flip test" (righting and getting back into a capsized rowing shell) may use club equipment on their own time.  A buddy is required, and at least 2 boats need to be on the water together. Each rower should have a whistle, and a cell phone in a water-proof case.

Rowing for Adults

NCC offers recreational and competitive coaching opportunities for all members of our community, from novice to experienced rowers.

We have Learn-To-Row sessions monthly, and regular coached practices Tuesday,Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings. (yes, rowers do have the reputation as early risers- the water is calm, the sunrise awesome, and there's no better way to start the day)

Tuesday and Thursday practices are at 5:45-7:15 AM, open to recreational and competitve rowers.

Saturday and Sunday practices for the Competitive Group are 6:15 -8:15 AM, and for the Recreational Group, 8:30-10:15 AM.

In the summer, Tuesday and Thursday evening sessions are added.
